Old Comics

How much are these Old Comics?
I found them stuffed away in my room. theres about 100, in this really long shoebox, specially made for comics, it seems. they range from Spiderman, to ghost rider, to dark hawk, and x-force. Some have “collectable cards” and they’re all in plastic protectors. The oldest one is 1973, spiderman. Some are complete collections. I was wondering if McFarlane’s little graphic on the comics added to the value. Advice on how i should deal with my finding?

The Aesthetics of Comics $38.91 From Gary Larsons The Far Side to George Herrimans Krazy Kat, comic strips have two obvious defining features. They are visual narratives, using both words and pictures to tell stories, and they use word balloons to represent the speech and thought of depicted characters. Art historians have studied visual artifacts from every culture; cultural historians have recently paid close attention to movies. Yet the comic strip, an art form known to everyone, has not yet been much studied by aestheticians or art historians. This is the first full-length philosophical account of the comic strip.Distinguished philosopher David Carrier looks at popular American and Japanese comic strips to identify and solve the aesthetic problems posed by comic strips and to explain the relationship of this artistic genre to other forms of visual art. He traces the use of speech and thought balloons to early Renaissance art and claims that the speech balloon defines comics as neither a purely visual nor a strictly verbal art form, but as something radically new. Comics, he claims, are essentially a composite art that, when successful, seamlessly combine verbal and visual elements.Carrier looks at the way an audience interprets comics and contrasts the interpretation of comics and other mass-culture images to that of Old Master visual art. The meaning behind the comic can be immediately grasped by the average reader, whereas a piece of museum art can only be fully interpreted by scholars familiar with the history and the background behind the painting. Finally, Carrier relates comics to art history. Ultimately, Carriers analysis of comics shows why this popular art is worthy of philosophical study and proves thata better understanding of comics will help us better understand the history of art. |

Simpsons Comics Strike Back $3.95 It’s another sidesplitting series of adventures as America’s most popular cartoon family returns to the big colorful comic pages in this latest addition to the bestselling Simpsons anthologies. In "Simpsons Comics Strike Back," Groening fans are treated to another laugh-fest as they catch up on the latest antics of this irrepressibly irreverent family. First, it’s a yuck-filled yarn of yore when Grampa Simpson reminisces about the good old days of the Depression. Then Patty and Selma take to the air as flight attendants, and the friendly skies will never be the same. Next, the network wars have come to town, and the big boys are running scared from the BBC — the Bart Broadcasting Channel. Then last, but certainly not least, it’s an epic brawl as the Presidential Fitness Program dispatches McBain to Springfield to whip the cholesterol-clogged town into shape. Between him and success, however, is hungry Homer Simpson. When the TV show just isn’t enough, fans turn to the comic books to satiate their Simpsons addiction. A veritable bonanza of the characteristic wit that made the series an international hit, this anthology will be a treasured gift for all fans of Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Homer and Marge. |

King Aroo, Volume 1: Complete Comics 1950-1952 $36.64 The Library of American Comics proudly presents a long-neglected classic – King Aroo Lauded by critics in the pantheon of great strips such as Krazy Kat, Pogo, and Barnaby, Jack Kent’s brilliantly conceived world brought smiles to young and old alike with its fanciful array of clever puns, visual humor, and good old slapstick. The postage-stamp-sized kingdom of Myopia is presided over by kindly King Aroo and his faithful (if sometimes prickly) retainer, Yupyop. The King turns to Professor Yorgle for wisdom, Wanda Witch for magic spells, the kangaroo mailman, Mr. Pennipost, for news from far and wide… and looks for love from the Beautiful Princess From the Kingdom Next Door. Volume One celebrates the strip’s 60th anniversary by presenting every daily and Sunday strip from the beginning in 1950 through 1952, reproduced from original artwork and syndicate proofs from the Jack Kent Estate. The series is edited and designed by Eisner Award-winner, Dean Mullaney, with an illuminating biographical text feature by Bruce Canwell, and an introduction by Sergio Aragones. |

Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero $20.22 "Fingeroth’s book is an easy, intriguing read, exploring the histories of superheroes and their creators. This is clearly a topic in which Fingeroth is eminently well-versed." -Jewish Book World "Like a Yiddish theater play on the old Jewish Second Avenue, or like a really good comic book, Danny will make you laugh, cry and, best of all, he’ll make you think." –From the foreword by Stan Lee In Disguised as Clark Kent, Danny Fingeroth–a long-time executive in the comics business who wrote and edited Spider-Man as well as other famous lines for Marvel–reflects on the phenomenon of the heavily Jewish elements that, consciously or not, went into the creation of the superhero. Centering on questions of Jewish identity, which is historically about the push and pull toward and away from that very identity, Disguised as Clark Kent brings valuable insight into the fantasies that fuel our imaginations and entertainment industry, as well as many significant and often hidden aspects of our society. > |
